What do I think about donating/giving? I think it is not just Christianity that teaches giving. All religions, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, etc. teach it, too. It is also true that it is more common among religious people to give/donate. Giving benefits the giver and the recipient.
Growing up in the Philippines, I only think of Christmas as the day to receive gifts such clothes, shoes, chocolates, etc. I also received cash from our parents, close and distant wealthy relatives. It is the most happiest time for me. As I get older, I realized that it was always the wealthier that give gifts. The poorer ones only wait for hand out. I now think that one doesn’t need to be very wealthy to give. We don’t need to give cash all the time. We can offer our services, time or our talents.
When I was in the US, during this time of the year, my husband and I received a lot of solicitation of cash from several organizations. These organizations were very aggressive in their fund raising activities. It was not very appealing to me.
My desire to donate or give (back) became stronger after we moved in to Japan. Japan is not an easy country for me to live in. The language is one of the big reasons. Because of this, I am always in need of help. Rearing three children here makes my life more complicated. But charitable friends were always around offering their precious time to help me with everything such as referring a good doctor when I or my children need one. They even accompanied me when I need to visit a doctor’s clinic. These friends also thought me the art of giving back. Without exceptions, if I give something to a friend, he/she always gives me something back. Sometimes they give back more than I gave them. I think this is a wonderful tradition. It taught me that If I were happy to receive and I should he happy to give back.
I have experienced many difficulties here but it is also here where I received lots of help. And it made everything easier.
It is at the YMCA , Tenjin where I received acceptance, recognition, etc. YMCA, Tenjin treated me with generosity and thoughtfulness. I do not have any hesitation to take part in its charitable missions. I take my job seriously and will always look for novel ways of teaching to help the students improve their English language skills.
